BLM: Black Clothing Designers

In the past ten days, the world has seen hundreds, maybe even thousands of protests of outrage after the murder of George Floyd. He was a Black man in Minneapolis who was murdered at the hands of a white police officer. 

Twitter Says Buy Black

If you just take a gander at Twitter and the trending section you’ll find various calls to action in response to the events. One of them is to buy black. What exactly this means and what its benefit is is up for hella debate. One thing that many people agree on is that they don’t know WHERE to buy black. As a fellow black person, naturally I have to plug you into the black-owned clothing brands that you’re looking for.

Buying Black

  1. HGC Apparel was founded by Marcia Smith in Washington D.C. This clothing line was inspired by 90s fashion focuses on bold messages that reflect the current state of the world through the eyes of the black community. They have hoodies, sweatshirts and tees.

2. Lukafit is an active sportswear brand that caters to and flatters the shapes of curvier black women. They have leggings and tops for any body shape.

3. Then we have Stuzo Clothing ! A gender neutral clothing store in Los Angeles, California that has an assortment of tops and bottoms.

4. Dope on Arrival NYC by Imani B. Johnson is also inspired by the 90s but with a self advocacy twist. Each piece has a bold statement as a conversation starter so that we can have those difficult conversations so often avoided. They have swimsuits, crop tops, sweats, tees, leggings, bags and hats.
